Celebrating life; acknowledging, talking about and planning for death

Amanda Roberts (15).PNG

Being Mortal is a campaign which encourages us all to celebrate life and acknowledge, talk about and plan for death, dying and grieving.

Talking about and planning for these natural life processes helps to reduce fear, promotes wellbeing and gives us agency over our own story.  It empowers us to engage, over time, in end-of-life decision-making which fully reflects what matters to us as individuals.

Supporting human flourishing

Being Mortal shines a light on the natural processes of  life, death, dying and grieving which we all experience in different ways.

Developments in medicine have changed the way we die. To live and die well, we need to learn to acknowledge, discuss and plan for death, dying and grieving.  We aim to support people in the final stages of their lives, those who care for them and those who mourn their loss. We seek to support individuals, at whatever stage of life,  to remain the authors of their own story.  The short video below explains more about our work.

Our values

 - All human beings should be regarded as equally valuable persons,  without qualification, for as long as we live.

  - All persons, in life and in death, have the right to be respected and treated fairly and with kindness by others.

 - Personhood carries with it the right to make decisions about our own lives, whatever point of life's path we are at.

 - Personhood carries the responsibility to be the best possible version of ourselves, which includes caring for others.

Our strategy

We have three related programmes of work, made up of a collection of linked projects.

This programme focuses on learning from the work of others and conducting our own research and evaluation to support us in developing our understanding of and practice in death literacy.

Practice innovation

This programme focuses on developing new practices to empower people to acknowledge, talk about and plan for death, dying and grieving.

Peer support

In this programme we offer collaborative support to individuals or organisations who are developing learning and practice in this field.
