Being Mortal

Being Mortal: supporting us all to acknowledge, discuss and plan for death, dying and grieving.

Our values

  • All human beings should be regarded as equally valuable persons,  without qualification, for as long as we live.

  • All persons have the right to be respected and treated fairly and with kindness by others.

  • Personhood carries with it the right to make decisions about our own lives, whatever point of life's path we are at.

  • Personhood carries the responsibility to be the best possible version of ourselves, which includes caring for others.

Supporting human flourishing

  • 'You do know we all die in the end?'  - talks for community groups about death, dying, grieving and living well

  • Hoping for the best, planning for the worst - workshops for people with a terminal diagnosis which include topics such as handling difficult conversations and funeral and memorial planning

  • What matters to me now - art-based workshops in which individuals explore what matters to them now through art-making.  No artistic ability needed.

We also develop bespoke sessions to suit particular groups.

Working together

We seek to collaborate with individuals and organisations to develop ways of supporting people to live and die well. The initiatives we create together should diminish fear and help people to have a greater sense of agency in their own death, dying and grieving. â€‹

Please do email us if you are interested in joining an event or collaborating.

Being Mortal shines a light on the natural processes of death, dying and grieving which we all experience in different ways.  Developments in medicine have changed the way we die. To live well, we need to learn more about what may happen to us at the end of life.  We also need to learn how to acknowledge, discuss and plan for death, dying and grieving.  We aim to support people in the final stages of their lives, those who care for them and those who mourn their loss. We seek to support individuals to remain the authors of their own story.  We currently offer a series of talks and workshops to help us to do this:
